What is Geographical Indication

Geographical Indication (GI) is an indication used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to its origin in that defined geographical locality.

Brief of GI of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999

India is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and to comply with the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 came into existence in 2003.

Selection Procedure & Eligibility

Application has to be filed before the GI registry which comes under the office of Controller General of Patent, Designs & Trade Marks, The Ministry of Commerce& Industry.

The eligibility of the claim of Geographical Indication is verified and the tag is allotted which is like a trademark of the product attached with that particular region

Why it is necessary

Geographical Indication products can benefit the rural economy in remote areas, by supplementing the incomes of artisans, farmers, weavers, and craftsmen. India’s rural artisans possess unique skills and knowledge of traditional practices and methods, passed down from generation to generation, which needs to be protected and promoted. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has taken several initiatives in this regard and is actively involved in the promotion and marketing of GIs.
